JUST 5 MINUTES A DAY…

Use one of these sight-reading methods…just a couple of pages per day.  Patterns of Sound starts in the key of C, whereas The Choral Approach and Sing On Sight begin in the key of F which is better for changing voices.

STARTER CHORALS

If you’re ready to move beyond the books above, these starters chorals might be perfect to take your group to the next level. These are “NO FAIL” selections that are sure to get your students singing. I’ll be adding additional “tried and true” selections by a variety of composers/arrangers here in the near future. Best Day of My Life and Hakuna Matata are great for a motivating “Pop” choral.

For 6th Grade

If your choir is strictly 6th graders, this collection is a sure winner! Note how the part II accommodates the boy alto or cambiata range effectively. Mostly A to A and melodic with a great deal of call and response. A great place to start.

For 7th and 8th Grade

If your choir is primarily 7th and 8th graders, I recommend 3-part mixed selections. Why 3-part??? If you use 2-part, changing and changed voices will double parts 8vb creating a heavy sounding voicing. The 3-part mixed selections that I have chosen feature a great deal of “call and response”. When parallel harmony is used the guys part is melodic in nature and should be easy to sing. Try it!

If you’ve made it this far… congratulations! Your ensemble should be off and running, if not, contact me here on my website and I will help you succeed. As a footnote….make every effort to keep your choir elective so that you don’t get students who really are uncomfortable singing. It can make the job very difficult…of course, you know this because you started by reading “Sing 678…50 Ways To Improve Your Upper Elementary or Middle School Choir”! Right??? :)

ALL THE BEST! - Roger
